In the Future Something Will Have Happened

In The Future Something Will Have Happened is a live performance by Lucky Pierre for an audience of one.

In an intake interview, the audience is given three options for traveling forward in time: a month, a year, or a decade. After making their selection, they are brought outside and silently guided on a long walk through the local neighborhood. Upon returning to the venue, the audience discovers they have arrived in the future, indeed as far forward as they had chosen, and they reflect on what happened in the meantime. Months later, the audience receives a typewritten report in the mail from Lucky Pierre, reflecting in personal terms on what we experienced together, and what we know about the future from this new point in the present.

The piece explores human imaginative capacity for possibilities beyond the tyranny of the probable, as well as intimacy, friendship, and loss (of time and of lives) in the aftermath of the pandemic. By performing for only one person at a time, it challenges notions of artistic value as determined by quantitative breadth (number of likes, say), rather than qualitative depth (one deeply personal encounter).
